Why Smart Coaster?
This innovative coaster-based design is key for hydration. It's as simple as keeping your bottle on the coaster when throughout the day to make sure you hit your daily water intake. You might be wondering: Is dehydration really an issue? With an increasing number of sedentary lifestyles due to the workforce, people find themselves sitting down the majority of the day, and in a stressful work environment, water is the last thing on a busy worker's mind. According to the NIH, 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. Dehydration is linked to low blood pressure, seizures, and kidney failure in severe cases. With Smart Coaster, simply input your weight and go about your day. Smart Coaster will track your water intake and send reminders throughout the day to remind you to stay hydrated.

Our Design
The design consists of hardware and software components. The hardware consists of an electrical circuit where a pressure sensor measures the weight change of the bottle and sends the data wirelessly. Through experimentation, the bottle was calibrated to different levels of water with regression used to equate pressure change into fluid ounces. The software will calculate the necessary fluid ounces for hydration based on body weight and will send notifications using the Twilio API to remind the user to stay hydrated. This lightweight design is durable and easily transportable if necessary.
